Duke University’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is searching for a full-time, non-tenure track Staff Psychologist and invites applications from and nominations of qualified candidates. Salary will be commensurate with candidate’s experience and skills. CAPS is the primary counseling center for the Duke student community. Its multidisciplinary staff is comprised of fourteen senior staff members including psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists. Additionally, there are three pre-doctoral psychology interns in its APA accredited training program, two social work interns, and two to three psychiatry residents. This position requires a doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited academic program and internship, with 3-5 years of doctoral level experience. Interested individuals should be licensed or license-eligible in the state of North Carolina.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Nature of Responsibilities: Provides direct clinical services that include assessment, crisis intervention and brief individual, couples and group therapy in a university counseling center serving a diverse community. Also provides clinical supervision of pre-doctoral psychology interns as well as providing training and consultation with all graduate trainees. Contributes to the outreach and developmental programming efforts of the center, offering workshops and psycho-education. Participates in overall mission of the Division of Student Affairs, with occasional service on university-wide committees.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Provides individual, couples, and group short-term psychotherapy for students.
- Provides initial assessments, crisis management, walk-in emergency service, and assumes on-call responsibilities for daytime and evening emergency services.
- Develops and provides open-ended and brief group psychotherapy as well as structured workshops and psycho-educational groups on various mental health, substance abuse, and student development issues.
- Assists the center in meeting requests for outreach presentations/programs on mental health concerns, campus life issues, and student-leader training activities.
- Supervises pre-doctoral psychology interns in an APA accredited training program, and participates in training experiences for masters and doctoral level graduate trainees.
- Provides case management assistance and crisis management consultation to trainees.
- Provides training, supervision, and consultation on Career Development Counseling to trainees.
- Maintains clinical records and participates in documenting data related to clinical, consultation, and outreach contacts.
- Consults with psychiatrists in conjunction with prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medication for psychotherapy patients.
- Consults with parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students, when appropriate, in order to provide quality care to students.
- Makes referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals, when appropriate.
- Participates in Student Affairs committees as assigned and/or invited.
- Attends and participates in regular CAPS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service training.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Holds a completed doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA approved program, with 3-5 years of doctoral level experience.
- Licensed or license-eligible in the State of North Carolina.
- Experienced and eligible to provide supervision and training to interns and post-doctoral level trainees, preferably with experience in APA approved programs.
- Demonstrates experience and ability to work as part of a highly cohesive and interdisciplinary team committed to individual and cultural diversity
- Understanding of and commitment to working as an integral part of a Student Affairs community with shared goals toward enhancing student development.
- Demonstrates strong organizational and communication skills.
- Has experience in utilizing a multicultural framework and commitment to working with diverse clients, including individuals from varying sexual orientations and/or from ethnically/racially diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrates experience with brief individual, group and couples psychotherapy, crisis intervention, psychological assessment and supervision of trainees; and a high level of experience and competency in consultation.
- Experience and creativity in providing outreach services, including development and implementation of workshops and facilitation of group discussions.
- Demonstrates expertise in the clinical treatment and/or outreach focus for one or more of the following: anxiety, stress and other performance related issues, eating disorders, depression, alcohol and substance abuse issues, and relationship problems.
- Demonstrates experience and expertise in the clinical treatment and/or outreach focus for one or more of the following constituencies: men, LGBT students, Latino/a students.
PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong preference for expertise in men’s issues and male identity development
- Strong preference for counseling center experience in a college/university setting
- Strong preference for experience or expertise in providing career/vocational counseling, outreach programming, and testing
- Demonstrated ability to provide supervision and training in psychological assessment.
- Bilingual
- Experience and/or interest in developing community level interventions toward education as well as culture/climate change.
- Computer skills including web site management or development of web2 applications, audio or video podcasting; familiarity with any of the following software applications: PowerPoint, ViewsFlash, PhotoShop, InDesign, Illustrator, and any movie editing software.
